Society says as young people we are lazy, naive, rebellious, and followers not leaders. The world does not expect much from us as young people and that has transferred over to the church. We are told we need to follow other's examples not be the examples. The bible has very different things to say, and I'm hoping as a young christian myself at 22 years old I can help other young Christians strive to be leaders not followers, to be servants not those who are served, to find worth in God's eyes not the world's eyes. 1 Timothy 4: 12 says, "Don't let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in life, in love, in faith and in purity."

About me: My name is Caleb I am 22 years old and I recently graduated from Pepperdine University. I am not a young person who has been rejected by society so I am lashing out, quite the opposite. I found myself in college to be a part of the world, I drank, I partied, I went on spring break trips to Mexico, I was in a fraternity, I even modeled professionally in LA for a while. What I realized is that some where along the way I had succumbed to the World's expectations of what a college student should be and put God on the back burner. My mind set was that I had time to be a good Christian and an example when I was older, I realize now that there's no better time to serve God and be an example then the now. I have rededicated my life to Christ and helping young people do the same. I am a pseudo college intern at my church and can't wait to see the way God will challenge me.

Is reading your bible necessary? DUH!

Why should we read our bibles daily? I have narrowed it down to 4 main reasons among others.

1. Spiritual Growth

It is impossible to grow in your faith without reading the bible. “As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the Word, that ye may grow thereby” (1 Peter 2:2). Christians cannot grow without food. God’s Word is the food. And it is a great day when “baby” learns to feed himself. Many who have been Christians for years have never learned to feed themselves from God’s Word. Listening to sermons, attending Bible classes and reading good books and articles cannot take the place of personal feeding on the Word of God. We cannot thrive unless we get spiritual strength every day from God through His Word. Think of it this way: Who among us would want to miss even a single day of eating?

Yet God’s Word is our spiritual manna sent down from heaven.

2. Combating temptations and Satan

The bible is described as ,”For the word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.” The word of God is literally a weapon against Satan and temptation. It is a guide on how to face temptation and combat Satan, it is a guide to help us abstain from evil. It is there for any situation we face, there are tons of examples of people who faced all kinds of sin that we can look to so that we do not have to experience them ourselves.

3.To find Truth

Without reading the bible how can we find truth? Easy answer, you can’t. Finding truth is up to each one of us, we are solely responsible for our souls. 1 Timothy 2:15 “Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a workman who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth.” It is impossible to discern false doctrine if we don’t read our bibles. The Bible gives us the measuring stick by which we can distinguish truth from error. It tells us how to get to heaven and have eternal life with God and how to avoid living a life of sin. “The entrance of Thy Words giveth light” (Psa. 119:130).

4.Because it is commanded of us

“Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every Word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God” (Matt. 4:4).

John 5:39 Search the Scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me.

1 Timothy 3: 16-17 “All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works.”

It is impossible to even have a faith without reading the bible. Without the word there is no insight to Jesus’ life, to who God is, and no Christianity at all.
